Product Details

Yellowish-brown color, with more fruits and a slight amount of Demi-Sec. This variety constitutes the largest proportion of production. Dates from 1955.

Originally this beer was only brewed for New Year’s Eve celebrations. Rochefort 8 begins with a density of 20.8º Plato and reaches a final 9.2% ABV.

Due to the overwhelming success of this beer, the monks decided around 1960 to brew it on a regular basis. Sometimes this beer is also referred to as the Special.

The brewery is located inside the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Saint-Remy, near the town of Rochefort, and has been brewing beer since 1595. There are approximately 15 monks resident at the monastery. As with all other Trappist breweries, the beer is only sold in order to financially support the monastery and some other charitable causes. Like many strong Belgian beers, those produced at Rochefort age well and can be cellared for at least five years while maintaining quality. The water for the beers is drawn from a well located inside the monastery walls.

Short DescriptionThe lower gravity cousin to Rochefort 10. Nicknamed Speciale (The Special), this beer is the most recent production. The Rochefort 8 has a more tawny colour and a more pronounced aroma, with an even richer fruitiness (a slight undertone of fig) and a little more spiced dryness, like that of a cake, which gives a balanced finish to the final notes.
