Samuel Adams Thirteenth Hour Stout (Barrel Room Collection)
The 13th hour is the witching hour, and a time when strange brews can occur. With 13 ingredients, we combined the roasted chocolate and coffee flavors of a stout with the complex spicy character of a Belgian-style ale aged in oak for a deep, robust, and captivating brew.
THE TRADE
The traditional roasty malts in Thirteenth Hour are taken in a new direction by the unexpected character of Kosmic Mother Funk (KMF) that add a layer of complexity and flavor with hints of oak, peppery spice, dark fruit, and a hint of acidity. KMF is an ale that we’ve aged in large oak tuns for over a year where it undergoes a secondary fermentation to give the beer a rich tropical fruit note and some sourness. The beer is also bottle conditioned which creates another fermentation giving the beer an extra smooth and balanced flavor.
THE LEGACY
We first began experimenting with barrel aging over 15 years ago in our Boston Brewery, taking cues from the ancient brewmasters of Belgium. Belgian beers are known for the distinctive character of their yeasts and the practice of aging and blending beers. These specialty yeasts present a wide array of flavors and are matured through a process of blending and aging portions of the beers in wooden tuns. For Thirteenth Hour we combined our signature Kosmic Mother Funk with a roasty stout for an American creation that’s full of deep complex flavors.
